Chestnut Ridge Middle Academic Spotlight
Students in Mrs. Danielle Callihan's math enrichment WIN period have been taught how to do the calculations to keep our hydroponics unit working at full efficiency with daily water testing of both nutrients and pH. They have begun germinating our first round of plants which include butterhead and romaine lettuces. They have placed the pelleted seeds in rockwool and will be testing the water daily, adding nutrients as needed, and using the treated water to hydrate the seeds as they germinate. They hop to have enough growth before the end of the week to transplant them into the hydroponics unit where they will continue to grow for approximately 28 days, and then will be harvested. Next month, they plan to use both units, one for lettuce, the other for peppers. To see the photo that accompany the article, please click on read more.
